Event Ticketing System Dilemma: One Venue’s Web3 Transition
The scale is the part that deserves a pause: Passo manages more than 25 million tickets a year across 38 football clubs and UEFA events.
That is not a boutique NFT experiment with a glossy trailer and a few thousand collectible passes. It is an attempt to rebuild an event ticketing system while the turnstiles remain open.
I find this transition compelling precisely because it is not about making a ticket look futuristic. A QR code in a nicer wallet interface is decorative. The real test is whether a blockchain event pass can survive the grubby realities of matchday: the friend forwarding a ticket late, the reseller extracting a premium, the gate scanner losing connectivity, the customer who has never heard the phrase “seed phrase” and has no intention of starting now.
The promise of Web3 ticketing is tangible: a ticket can become a programmable object with a clear supply chain provenance, rules that travel with it, and post-event utility that does not evaporate when the lights come up. The dilemma is equally tangible. Venues need this system to be simpler than the technology beneath it, compliant with privacy law, and faster than the legacy machinery it is replacing.
Legacy ticketing is expensive because it was built to be opaque
The conventional ticket is usually treated as a disposable permission slip. You buy it, receive a barcode, pass through a gate, and lose any meaningful connection with the issuer once the event is over. Behind that apparently simple journey sits a stack of payment processors, resellers, marketplaces, customer-service systems, fraud controls, and settlement delays.
The secondary market exposes the weakest seam.
In traditional resale systems, settlement can take eight to 12 days, while payment-processing fees average around 9.2% of the transaction value. That is a strange arrangement for an industry selling time-sensitive access. The ticket may be required at 7:30 p.m. on Friday; the economic settlement around it can still crawl through the system long after the crowd has gone home.
Meanwhile, more than one in 10 concert-ticket buyers has encountered fraud or scalping. That figure should embarrass the entire category. Ticket fraud is not some rare technical mishap. It is the predictable result of issuing easily copied credentials into a marketplace that rewards scarcity, distance, and plausible deniability.
A blockchain ticket does not magically make bad actors disappear. A scalper can still sell access to a device, a wallet, or a private key. But smart contract tickets can make the official object far harder to duplicate, trace its transfer history, and enforce resale conditions at the source rather than through a polite request buried in terms and conditions.

The difference is not aesthetic. It is architectural. In the old model, a ticket is a message. In the stronger Web3 model, it is a governed product.
A useful ticket is not a JPEG with a barcode attached. It is access with memory, rules, and a life after the gate.
That last part matters culturally as much as operationally. The best tickets have always been status objects. Fans kept paper stubs from stadium tours, festivals, and first nights because the object carried social residue: I was there. Digital ticketing stripped that away in the name of convenience. A well-designed digital collectible pass can restore it, provided it does not confuse sentiment with clutter.
Programmable resale turns leakage into venue revenue
The secondary market is where ticketing’s most obvious irritation becomes a business model. A venue, artist, club, or promoter creates the demand; an unaffiliated reseller often captures the upside when that demand becomes feverish.
Programmable royalty mechanisms offer a cleaner proposition. A resale rule written into a smart contract can route a small share of an authorized secondary sale back to the original organizer. Available figures suggest organizers can recapture an average of 4.8% of secondary-market resale value this way.
That number should not be read as free money. It is a design decision with consequences. If the royalty is too aggressive, fans will move toward private, off-platform arrangements. If the approved resale flow is clumsy, the market will route around it. If the issuer sets no price ceiling at all, the NFT wrapper merely gives an old extraction machine a sleeker chassis.
I would assess resale logic in three layers:
1. Price discipline. A promoter can impose a resale ceiling, a percentage above face value, or a narrow transfer period. This will not abolish every workaround, but it can make the official route visibly fairer than a speculative free-for-all.
2. Revenue routing. The contract can distribute proceeds between the venue, artist, promoter, rights holder, and ticketing platform. That is more precise than reconciling fragmented marketplace reports months later.
3. Eligibility and access. A ticket can be transferable only to verified users, restricted to a local market, or upgraded when held by a particular membership credential. This is where the ticket begins to behave less like a receipt and more like a product with tangible utility.
The cultural risk is over-engineering. A fan should not need to understand token standards, gas abstraction, or smart-contract permissions to give a spare ticket to a sibling. The system must be strict where fraud occurs and graceful where ordinary human behavior occurs.
There is a broader financial lesson here, one familiar to anyone studying the operational discipline of professional asset management: ownership records, transfer rules, and settlement architecture are never glamorous until they fail. In ticketing, however, that failure happens in public, at a gate, with thousands of people watching the clock.
Passo and Tixbase are testing scale, not novelty
The Passo–Tixbase agreement is valuable because its ambition is measurable. Passo is not transitioning a few invitation-only fashion events; it handles ticketing for football teams and UEFA events where access is emotionally charged, time-sensitive, and highly vulnerable to resale pressure.
TixChain, the designated Avalanche Layer-1 infrastructure, is intended to carry that migration over a five-year exclusive partnership. The immediate question is not whether a blockchain can mint 25 million ticket records. Modern infrastructure can process records at scale. The harder question is whether the entire service layer can preserve the familiar, boring reliability that customers expect from a ticket.
A working event ticketing system needs more than issuance:
- It needs scanning hardware that recognizes a valid credential quickly at the perimeter.
- It needs an operator dashboard that staff can use without becoming blockchain specialists.
- It needs customer support procedures for lost phones, changed email addresses, accidental transfers, and disputed purchases.
- It needs an offline or degraded-connectivity plan for stadium entrances.
- It needs a way to distinguish a valid transfer from a compromised account.
- It needs clear rules for refunds, postponements, and event cancellations.
None of these needs are glamorous. All of them decide whether the product is real.
GET Protocol offers an earlier picture of what persistent infrastructure work looks like. Before moving operations to Polygon, it had registered 640,630 tickets for 4,470 events on Ethereum. In July 2023, the company raised €4 million to support expansion and help conventional ticketing operations make the transition. That is not the vocabulary of a novelty drop. It is the vocabulary of integration costs, venue sales cycles, and systems that must work under pressure.
The key distinction is between an NFT ticket campaign and an NFT ticket rail.
A campaign gives a limited group a collectible. A rail runs admissions, transfers, customer service, settlement, and reporting without asking the audience to admire the machinery. Brands tend to celebrate the former because it photographs well. Venues should invest in the latter because nobody celebrates a queue that moves.
In ticketing, the most sophisticated interface is the one a fan never has to notice.
The GDPR problem is not a footnote
The cleanest sales pitch for blockchain ticketing often collapses at the moment someone says “personal data.”
GDPR’s Article 17 gives individuals the right to erasure in defined circumstances. A blockchain’s central design feature is that its records are intended to be immutable. Put a customer’s name, email address, phone number, or other identifying information directly on-chain, and the system has created a compliance problem with no elegant delete button.
This is not an argument against blockchain event passes. It is an argument against treating the ledger as a customer database.
A responsible architecture separates the layers. The blockchain can record a ticket identifier, state changes, ownership permissions, and transfer history in a manner designed to avoid directly exposing personal data. Personally identifiable information belongs in a controlled off-chain environment, where access controls, retention rules, and deletion procedures can actually be applied.
The practical design principles are fairly clear:
- Keep personally identifiable data off-chain. The ledger should not become a permanent archive of names, emails, passport details, or payment information.
- Minimize what the ticket contract stores. A unique token reference and access status are more defensible than a rich customer profile.
- Use revocation and re-issuance carefully. A lost phone should not mean permanent loss of access; the system needs a controlled recovery process without turning every ticket into a manually administered exception.
- Explain data flows in plain language. Fans do not need a lecture on cryptography, but they deserve to know what is stored, where, and why.
- Treat analytics as a separate consent question. A post-event membership offer may be valuable. It should not be smuggled into the transaction merely because the infrastructure can connect attendance to identity.
What remains unclear in the Passo migration is the exact privacy architecture used on TixChain: whether personal data is maintained entirely in off-chain systems, whether privacy-preserving proofs are involved, or whether another method governs the relationship between ticket credentials and customer identity. That uncertainty is not a flaw in itself. But it is the area I would interrogate before admiring the scale announcement.
The seductive phrase “immutable proof” needs adult supervision. Fans want dependable entry, not a permanent public trace of every cultural event they have attended.
Walletless onboarding is the make-or-break design choice
The most fragile point in many Web3 ticketing platforms is the moment a perfectly ordinary buyer encounters a wallet prompt.
The industry spent years training consumers to buy tickets with a card, receive confirmation by email, and add a pass to a phone wallet. Asking that same customer to install an unfamiliar application, write down a recovery phrase, and learn custody etiquette before seeing a football match is not innovation. It is friction dressed as initiation.
YellowHeart and similar platforms have addressed this by allowing purchases via conventional credit cards and using walletless onboarding. That is the correct direction. The blockchain can sit beneath the transaction like a well-built subfloor. It does not need to be the first thing a customer steps on.
For mass adoption, I would judge the experience by four ordinary moments rather than by its crypto vocabulary:
Purchase
The buyer should pay with the familiar method they already trust. If a custodial or embedded wallet is created behind the scenes, that should serve the buyer rather than recruit them into a new hobby.
Delivery
The ticket should arrive where tickets belong: in a branded app, mobile wallet, or account page. “Claim your NFT” is acceptable for a collector edition; it is a poor default instruction for general admission.
Entry
NFC chips, QR codes, or dynamic credentials must be designed around the venue’s actual hardware and staffing. A gate attendant cannot troubleshoot a chain transaction while a crowd compresses behind the barrier.
Aftercare
This is where tokenized tickets can become genuinely distinctive. After the event, the pass can unlock a priority presale, a recorded match highlight, a merchandise allocation, a loyalty tier, or a private invitation. But the utility must feel earned, not like a brand mailing list wearing a digital costume.
The most effective digital collectible passes will be restrained. A season-ticket holder may value a persistent identity that proves attendance across years. A one-off concertgoer may value a beautifully designed souvenir and early access to the next show. Neither necessarily wants a dashboard full of badges, missions, or forced community mechanics.
Status signaling works when it is legible and scarce in the right way. It fails when every scanned entry produces another generic token begging for attention.
The ticket should outlast the event, not outlive its usefulness
The strongest case for Web3 ticketing is not that every venue needs to become a blockchain company. It is that the ticketing category has tolerated too much inefficiency for too long: copied barcodes, opaque resale, delayed settlement, inflated processing costs, and an almost total loss of the ticket as a cultural object.
Passo’s move with Tixbase will be watched because it forces the proposition into a serious environment. Twenty-five million annual tickets leave no room for a decorative prototype. Either the infrastructure will reduce friction while improving provenance and resale control, or the audience will reject it with the brisk indifference reserved for any technology that makes a simple task harder.
My verdict is conditional but firm. Blockchain ticketing has market longevity when it behaves like invisible infrastructure and produces visible benefits: cleaner entry, more credible resale, more accountable revenue flows, and a ticket worth keeping after the event. It does not have longevity when the NFT becomes the event’s loudest feature.
The future ticket should feel less like a speculative object and more like a finely made credential: useful at the gate, intelligent in circulation, and culturally satisfying in the drawer—or, now, in the wallet—after the night is over.
